ISO 9001 vs EN 9100: key differences

When ISO 9001 is enough and when you need EN 9100. A practical comparison of scope, requirements, sectors and cost, with criteria for quality managers.

What ISO 9001:2015 is

ISO 9001:2015 is the international reference standard for quality management systems, applicable to organisations of any sector and size. It defines the requirements for implementing a documented, verifiable system that ensures products and services conform to client expectations and applicable regulations.

Its approach is cross-cutting: process management, risk analysis, continual improvement, customer satisfaction, document and record control. It does not impose sector-specific requirements: what matters is that the organisation demonstrates consistency between what it says it does and what it actually does, with documented evidence retained.

Certification is managed through nationally accredited bodies (AENOR, Bureau Veritas, SGS, TÜV in Spain) under the IAF (International Accreditation Forum) scheme. Recognition is international and can be communicated to clients through the certificate and the certification body's public listing.

What EN 9100:2018 is

EN 9100:2018 is the aerospace sector version of ISO 9001. It incorporates the full ISO 9001 standard and extends it with clauses specific to the aeronautical, aerospace and defence sector: configuration management, FOD (Foreign Object Damage) control, prevention of counterfeit products, part-level traceability, special-process control, reinforced change management and document retention matched to the component's service life.

Unlike ISO 9001, EN 9100 is managed under the ICOP (Industry Controlled Other Party) scheme of the IAQG (International Aerospace Quality Group). Certification bodies authorised for EN 9100 must themselves be audited and authorised by the IAQG, and operate under common worldwide rules. This guarantees that an EN 9100 certificate issued in any country has exactly the same value.

In the United States the equivalent standard is AS9100; in Asia, JISQ 9100. The three are functionally equivalent and recognised through OASIS registration, the IAQG's public database where aerospace OEMs verify their suppliers.

When ISO 9001 is enough

ISO 9001 is sufficient for the vast majority of industrial projects outside the aerospace sector. If your end client is a standard industrial machinery manufacturer, a renewables operator, a manufacturer of non-aerospace-specific automotive components or a railway supplier with no specific programme requirements, ISO 9001 covers the usual documentary demands.

In these sectors, competitive differentiation is achieved through technical capability, lead times and the client relationship, rather than through the quality standard. An ISO 9001 with a mature system and real traceability is a solid base for growth without the aerospace-specific documentary overhead.

Reasonable exceptions: regulated sub-sectors within general industry (ATEX, pressure, medical) that may require specific complementary certifications, different from EN 9100.

When you need EN 9100

EN 9100 is practically mandatory if your end-client chain includes an aerospace OEM (Airbus, Boeing, Lockheed, Embraer, Bombardier, Dassault, Leonardo) or a defence integrator with military requirements. Without EN 9100 there is no OASIS registration, and without OASIS there is no approval as a Tier 1, 2 or 3 supplier to the sector.

It is also common when working with regulated components that travel with the aircraft throughout its service life: identification plates, calibrated tooling labels, serialised part marking. Document retention for the component's service life — one of EN 9100's distinguishing requirements — is what sets a true aeronautical supplier apart from a generalist one.

In adjacent sectors (land defence, commercial space, civil avionics) EN 9100 may not be strictly mandatory but is usually a preferred selection criterion because it demonstrates a sector quality culture.

A practical decision for your sector

If you manufacture for aeronautics, aerospace or defence: EN 9100 is necessary. Combine it with ISO 9001 to keep access to general industrial clients with no additional specific certification.

If you manufacture for renewable energy (photovoltaic, wind, BESS): ISO 9001 is the reference standard. EN 9100 adds no value except in specific cases with an aerospace end client.

If you manufacture for automotive and motorsport: ISO 9001 plus specific automotive certifications (IATF 16949 where applicable). EN 9100 only if there is direct aerospace involvement.

If you manufacture for railway: ISO 9001 plus, on some programmes, IRIS (International Railway Industry Standard). EN 9100 is not necessary except on cross-over projects.

If you manufacture for general industrial machinery: ISO 9001 is the standard and is usually sufficient. Superior documentary quality is then demonstrated through real traceability and retention beyond the minimum, not through an additional standard.
